Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language is one of the two concentrations of Korean Studies that Ewha GSIS offers. In this post, you will learn more about this concentration through our interview with a current master’s student in this major.
Following, we have an interview with Jooli Choi, a Ph.D. Student at Ewha GSIS!
Could you tell us about yourself?
Hi everyone! My name is Jooli Choi and I am studying for a doctorate degree in Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language in the Korean Studies Department, Ewha GSIS. It has been 8 years now since I started to study my major in EWHA. After completing my master’s degree, I started my doctoral course right away with the same major here. And while studying for the Ph.D. program, I took a three-year leave of absence from school to teach Korean language in Nicaragua and Paraguay in Central and South America through the KOICA Volunteer Program. That’s why I have been here so long. Now, I have one semester left for my doctoral coursework.
안녕하세요? 저는 현재 국제대학원 한국학과에서 한국어교육 박사과정에 재학중인 최주리라고 합니다. 이화에서 한국어교육을 공부한지 벌써 8년이나 지났네요. 이곳에서 석사과정을 마친 후 바로 박사과정을 시작했고, 박사과정 중에 코이카 해외봉사활동 프로그램을 통해 니카라과와 파라과이에서 한국어 교육단원으로 활동했어요. 그래서 3년 동안 학교를 떠나있느라 이렇게 오래 다니게 되었네요. 지금은 박사과정 딱 한 학기 남겨두고 있어요. 🙂
Could you explain to us about the program?
The Department of Korean Studies is generally divided into Korean Culture major and Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language major. Students who are majoring in Korean culture study the theoretical background and research methodology of Korean history and culture from various perspectives such as sociology, anthropology, religion, and gender, etc. Students majoring in Korean language education study something related to the theory of second language acquisition and curriculum design, assessment, and research methodology, and so on, and how to teach foreigners Korean grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation from various levels of phonology, syntax, semantics, and discourse pragmatics. My research interests are in the field of pragmatics and sociolinguistics especially speech act theory. In short, it is the study of the ways we convey the message.
For example, when we ask the other person to close the window, we can say in various ways such as ‘Close the window, please’, ‘Could you close the window please?’, or ‘Isn’t it cold?’. The degree of indirectness can vary depending on the various contextual factors such as the situation before and after, relation, and power distance with interlocutor or cultural background. Especially when foreigners from different cultures speak Korean, there are many more diverse and interesting phenomena. So, I find it interesting to study foreigners’ use of Korean language from an intercultural perspective and to explore why such phenomena occur from a cross-cultural perspective. So, I am very interested in researching how to effectively teach foreigners the interesting elements of Korean language.
한국학과는 크게 한국문화 전공과 외국어로서 한국어교육전공으로 나누어져 있어요. 한국문화 세부전공의 학생들은 사회학, 인류학, 종교학, 미학, 젠더 등 다양한 관점으로 한국의 역사와 문화 등에 대한 이론적 배경과 연구방법론에 대해 공부하고 한국어교육 전공의 학생들은 제2언어 습득 이론과 관련된 지식과 교육과정 설계, 평가, 연구방법론 등을 배우고 음운론, 통사론, 의미론, 담화 화용론 등 다양한 층위의 관점에서 어떻게 하면 외국인들에게 한국어 문법, 어휘, 발음 들을 효과적으로 가르쳐줄 수 있을지 공부하고 연구해요. 제 연구 관심분야는 한국어 화용론과 화행교육 분야인데 간단히 설명하면 우리가 말을 하는 방식에 대해 연구하는 학문이에요.
예를 들면 우리가 상대방에게 창문을 닫아 달라고 요청할 때 ‘창문 닫아줘!’, ‘ 창문 좀 닫아 줄 수 있어?’,아니면 ‘좀 춥지 않아?’와 같이 다양한 방식으로 말할 수 있는데 상대방과의 관계, 앞뒤 상황 등 다양한 상황적 요소와 문화권에 따라 간접적인 정도가 달라질 수 있죠. 특히 서로 다른 문화권의 외국인들이 한국어로 이야기할 땐 훨씬 더 다양하고 흥미로운 현상들이 나타나요. 그래서 저는 이문화간 관점에서 외국인들의 한국어 사용 양상을 연구하고 왜 그런 현상들이 나타났는지 그들의 출신문화를 비교문화적 관점에서 탐색하는 것이 재미있어요. 그래서 어떻게 하면 외국인들에게 한국어의 재미있는 요소들을 효과적으로 가르쳐줄 수 있을까 연구하는 것에 관심이 많아요.
What are the advantages of this program?
One of the advantages of the program is that we can learn theory and practical teaching methods. And if you take certain credits in the master’s course, you can get a teacher’s certificate in teaching Korean as a foreign language from the government. In my case, when I first started my career as a Korean language teacher in Nicaragua and Paraguay, it was beneficial to be able to apply the theory based on what I had learned at school such as needs analysis, curriculum design, etc.
As a student majoring in Korean language education, another advantage of the program in the Department is that we can take classes on Korean culture as well as Korean language education. When we teach Korean to foreigners, Korean culture cannot be left out. In this regard, I think that the cultural classes in the Department of Korean Studies provide a good opportunity to learn and reflect on Korean culture from an academic perspective. Last semester, I took a class called ‘Korean Daily Life History’, and it was a class to learn how people lived their daily lives, such as living circumstances, customs, and leisure activities, not just from a political perspective. I wrote my term paper about women’s daily life in the 1970s based on the letters that they sent to popular radio programs at that time.
Usually, for younger generations, the image of the 1970s in Korea is a politically dark era under the dictatorship of President Park Jung-hee. But while I was studying this subject, I found out how the people went on their life and found happiness in daily life at that time and it was so interesting. When we teach foreign students about Korean history, I thought it would be more interesting and enjoyable if we introduced these things, not just political events.
우리 학과의 장점은 이론과 실제적인 교수방법을 배울 수 있다는 거예요. 그리고 일정 학점을 석사과정에서 이수하면 교원자격증을 취득할 수가 있어요. 저의 경우 석사 2년과 박사 1년을 마치고 니카라과와 파라과이에서 한국어 교사로 처음 파견되었을 때 학교에서 배운 것을 바탕으로 요구조사 등을 통해 계획하고 하나씩 해보면서 현장에서 직접 이론을 적용해볼 수 있어 유익했어요.
한국어교육을 전공하는 학생으로서 국제대학원 한국학과의 또 다른 장점은 한국어교육뿐만 아니라 한국 문화에 대한 수업도 들을 수 있다는 거예요. 우리가 외국인들에게 한국어를 가르칠 때 한국문화를 빼놓을 수가 없죠. 이런 점에서 한국학과의 문화수업은 학문적 관점에서 한국문화를 배우고 성찰해볼 수 있는 좋은 기회를 제공한다고 생각해요. 지난학기에 저는 ‘한국 생활사’라는 문화수업을 들었는데 정치적 관점이 아닌 사람들의 주거환경, 관습, 여가활동 등 어떻게 일상을 살았는지 시대별로 배우는 수업이었어요. 저는 한국의 1970년대 라디오 사연에 나타난 여성들의 이야기를 주제로 그 당시 여성들의 생활을 연구하는 텀페이퍼를 썼었는데 보통 젊은 세대들에게 한국의 1970년대는 박정희 대통령의 유신 독재체제로 정치적으로 암울하고, 어두운 시대를 떠올리기 마련이거든요. 그런데 이 주제로 공부를 하면서 그 당시 사람들이 어떻게 행복을 발견하고 삶의 의미를 만들어 갔는지 연구하는 것은 매우 흥미롭고 재미있었어요. 그리고 외국인들에게 한국의 역사를 가르칠 때 단순히 역사적인 사실이 아니라 그 시대 사람들이 어떤 환경에서 어떤 유행의 옷을 입고 어떤 음식을 먹었는지 알려준다면 그들에게 더 흥미롭고 즐거운 역사수업이 되지 않을까 생각이 들었어요.

I’m lucky to study Korean Studies at Ewha GSIS. Because, as I mentioned before, I can study both Korean culture and Korean language education. After visiting KOICA, I became interested in the field of development cooperation. As you know, KOICA’s Overseas Volunteering Program is a kind of ODA (Official Development Assistance) by the Korean government. It was a great experience to be able to learn a new language and culture while hanging out with locals through this program, but also it was a meaningful time to feel more responsible and rewarding for my duty.
In my department, there is a system that allows students to study minors in development cooperation by completing certain credits. I haven’t decided whether to apply for a minor yet, but last semester, I took Professor Willoughby’s class “Cross-cultural Communications.” It was nice to be able to learn the various perspectives of foreign peers and to get to know them. If you guys are interested in Korean culture, I recommend you to take some classes in my department as well. Some of them are taught in English.
제가 국제대학원에 한국학과에서 공부하는 것은 정말 행운인 것 같아요. 앞서 말한 것처럼 문화화 한국어교육을 같이 공부할 수 있는 것도 그렇지만 코이카를 다녀온 후에 개발협력 분야에 관심이 생겼거든요. 코이카 해외봉사활동은 여러분들도 알다시피 한국 외교부에서 공적 개발 원조(ODA)에 해당하는 프로그램이에요. 이 프로그램을 통해 현지인들과 함께 어울리면서 새로운 언어와 문화를 배울 수 있는 것도 좋은 경험이었지만 개발협력의 관점에서 바라보니 내가 하는 일에 더 많은 책임감과 보람을 느낄 수 있는 의미있는 시간들이었어요. 우리 학과에서는 일정 학점을 이수하면 개발협력 부전공을 할 수 있는 제도가 있어요. 아직 부전공을 신청할지는 결정하지 못했지만 지난학기 국제학과의 윌로비 교수님의 수업을 수강한 적이 있었는데 국제학과의 다양한 국적의 학생들과 함께 공부하면서 한국을 바라보는 외국인들의 다양한 관점을 배울 수 있어 좋았어요. 국제학과 친구들도 한국문화에 관심이 있다면 한국학과에서 영어로 진행하는 수업이 있으니 관련 수업을 수강해보는 것도 좋을 것 같아요.
